How to Rollback or Pause SignalRGB Updates
Key Takeaways
  • Only rollback if a new SignalRGB release breaks your system, freezes, or crashes; staying on outdated builds is not recommended for security reasons.
  • Do NOT uninstall SignalRGB—uninstalling wipes your last known working version and forces the latest update upon reinstalling.
  • Renaming or deleting Update.exe inside %localappdata%\VortxEngine blocks automatic background updating.
  • Deleting the newest app-2.x.x directory immediately forces SignalRGB to launch the previous functional version.

Important Security & Stability Note:
Only follow this rollback guide if a recent SignalRGB update introduced severe bugs, broken device plugins, or stability crashes. We do not recommend staying on outdated versions permanently, as updates contain vital security patches, performance enhancements, and bug fixes. Once a patch is released by the SignalRGB team, you should re-enable updates.

Why Roll Back Instead of Reinstalling?

SignalRGB updates automatically in the background using the Squirrel application installer. When a new version is downloaded, the updater creates a new version folder alongside your previous build.

Do NOT uninstall SignalRGB from Windows Settings or Control Panel. If you uninstall:

  1. You will lose your last known working version.
  2. The official installer will simply pull down the same problematic latest version again.

Instead, following the steps below allows you to cleanly revert to your previous working version in less than two minutes.

Step-by-Step Rollback Guide

1. Close SignalRGB Completely

Ensure SignalRGB is not running in the background:

  • Right-click the SignalRGB icon in the Windows system tray (near the clock) and select Quit SignalRGB.
  • (Optional) Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and verify that no SignalRgb.exe or VortxEngine processes remain active.

2. Open the VortxEngine Application Folder

SignalRGB installs its binaries into your local user app data directory:

  1. Press Win + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog.
  2. Copy and paste the following path and press Enter:
    %localappdata%\VortxEngine

Inside this directory, you will see files similar to:

%localappdata%\VortxEngine\
├── Update.exe
├── app-2.4.xx\ <-- Previous stable version
├── app-2.5.xx\ <-- Buggy latest update
└── packages\

3. Pause Automatic Updates (Rename or Remove Update.exe)

SignalRGB checks for and applies new updates on startup via Update.exe.

  • Locate Update.exe in the %localappdata%\VortxEngine root folder.
  • Rename it to:
    Update.exe.bak
    (Or delete it entirely).

As long as Update.exe is renamed or missing, SignalRGB will be unable to run its background updater, effectively pausing all automatic updates.

4. Remove the Latest Buggy Version Directory

Look at the folders starting with app-:

  • Identify the latest version folder that introduced the issues (e.g., app-2.5.x or whichever has the newest date and highest version number).
  • Delete that folder (move it to Recycle Bin or press Shift + Delete).
  • Keep the older version folder (e.g., app-2.4.x), which was your previous stable build.

5. Launch SignalRGB

Now launch SignalRGB:

  1. Navigate into the remaining older version folder (e.g. app-2.4.xx).
  2. Double-click SignalRgb.exe (or launch it from your regular desktop/start menu shortcut).
  3. Verify in Settings → About that SignalRGB is now running the previous stable version.

Your layouts, device canvases, and custom lighting profiles will remain completely intact.

How to Resume Updates in the Future

Once the SignalRGB development team releases a fix for the bug:

  1. Close SignalRGB.
  2. Navigate back to %localappdata%\VortxEngine.
  3. Rename Update.exe.bak back to Update.exe (or run the official installer from the SignalRGB website).
  4. Launch SignalRGB to let it update to the newest patched build.
